8/16/00  UPDATE
Please sign my guestbook

August 16 4:00p.m. ... quick one ... being admitted into hospital NOW (Liz says), tomorrow is angiogram to insert catheter into hepatic artery ... later that night is chemo ... next day is barfing and ct scan ... next couple days are watching platelets/recovery. Had a nice day yesterday with John Larson and wife Maria. Big excitement for the day was getting a call that insurance has been approved. Once again, Sallie (our ombudsman and new best friend) and Pacificare HMO have come through for us.

More info as posted to MPIP bulletin board earlier tonight

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Monday night, Liz and I went to see the
Astros beat up on Pittsburgh. If our new stadium will be anything like theirs, I say go for it. the field level seats are like being at a little league game, you're so close. Liz and I had a 'refreshment' and watched the game for awhile from seats with this view. They pulled back the roof (and the outfield glass wall) around the sixth inning, which was way cool.

9:30 p.m. ... today was a mellow day.  Light breakfast, nice workout at the hotel gym, laid around watching a chick flick (
Message in a Bottle), a little prayer and meditation, then off to the hospital to meet with the doc again. He has everything lined up, ready to go ... not waiting for cat scans -- still Friday night.

This cancer center was recently designated the best cancer center in the US (world?) and it is easy to see why. The patient care facilities and services are unbelievable. There are people from all over the world here and shuttle buses deliver and pickup people all day long to go to all the hotels that specifically serve the hospital and give a huge discount to patients families. They have a deal with Continental for flights cheaper than bereavement rates for anyone we want to have come out here. They have a Murphy bed in each room, so spouses can spend the night. And the place is huge ... we were in elevator number 54 today. The menu looks like a condensed version of T.G.I.F.'s and the food is even edible. they run the whole thing like an ala carte room service. basically, a waiter brings up your order. And family and friends can order to. Liz ordered crab stuffed shrimp and it was pretty good (her meal only cost $9.00).

As an aside, one of my nurses looks exactly like
Sandra Bullock ... I'm not kidding. I think she is undercover, doing research for her next movie, you know, getting into the role. She says she a extra-graduate student nurse ... suuuuuuure. She kindof follows the other nurse around and does technical stuff like taking your  temperature. Of course it's merely a coincidence that Sandra lives in nearby Austin .... hmmmmmmm. Tomorrow, I will try to trick her by calling out "Sandra" and see what happens.

Tomorrow should be relatively mellow too. I have an angiogram in the morning to insert the catheter in the hepatic artery from the groin area (that's gotta hurt) to the liver ... they shoot it up with radioactive die and look at it (somehow) to see if the catheter ends up in the desirable part of the liver.

It has been good to hear from so many of you. Feel free to email or sign the guestbook or call the hotel (Liz) or me/us at room here at the hospital, room G961 (see links on main page for numbers).

Gotta go check emails now ... take care, y'all.
